The period of providing free 5G services seems to be drawing to a close. Reliance Jio and Airtel have been offering customers unlimited 5G data at 4G rates for more than a year, but this era of complimentary offerings is expected to conclude. Analysts anticipate that by the latter part of 2024, both Airtel and Reliance Jio may introduce charges for their 5G services.

As per a report by Economic Times, it is anticipated that the companies will cease offering unlimited 5G data to premium customers and instead introduce pricing that is at least 5-10% higher than their current 4G packs. The expected rollout for these new prices is set for the latter half of 2024.

The decision is believed to be oriented towards enhancing monetization and fostering revenue growth, according to analysts. Industry experts further anticipate that the two telecom operators will likely increase mobile tariffs by a minimum of 20% in the September quarter of 2024. This adjustment aims to enhance their RoCE (return on capital employed) amidst substantial investments in 5G and escalating customer acquisition costs. It’s worth noting that the other two telecom players in the Indian market, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and the government-owned BSNL, have yet to introduce 5G services.

Jio and Airtel to provide clarity on the terms of their unlimited 5G data offerings.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has reportedly requested Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to provide transparent terms and conditions for their unlimited 5G data offerings, as per a report from The Economic Times (ET).

The issue arose when Vodafone Idea, a competitor, filed a complaint against the two operators, citing “predatory pricing.” This matter had initially surfaced in 2016 when Airtel and Vodafone complained against Jio for charging below costs. Jio’s promotional plan during that time had also included free data for several months.

Trai dismissed Vodafone Idea’s predatory pricing complaint against both operators, asserting that the tariffs offered were not below costs. Officials reportedly highlighted that Vodafone Idea itself was providing “unlimited” 4G data plans.

Nevertheless, Trai directed Jio and Airtel to clarify the terms and conditions for their unlimited 5G data plans. Both telecommunications companies have reportedly complied and updated their terms and conditions accordingly.

Airtel has now outlined a fair usage policy for its 5G unlimited data, specifying that commercial usage applies beyond 300 GB in a 30-day period. Meanwhile, Jio addressed factors influencing data usage and emphasized that “unlimited data” does not imply an infinite amount.

According to the ET report, there are currently no regulations preventing telecom operators from offering plans labeled as “unlimited.” Moreover, there is no precise industry definition of “unlimited” to establish a specific data range for such plans. Consequently, telecom companies must inform customers about the applicability of fair usage policy (FUP). Or any potential disruptions in internet speed after a certain data threshold. This becomes crucial, especially since both Airtel and Jio confirmed to Trai that the term “unlimited”. Does not imply “infinity” as data usage remains constrained by speed and network limitations.
