Current Weather Conditions

According to India Meteorological Department latest forecast, the cyclonic circulation has moved westward, resulting in heavy rainfall across the western coastal states. Senior IMD scientist Naresh Kumar confirmed that regions in Maharashtra and Gujarat are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall today. Following the issuance of the red alert for Konkan Goa, Gujarat, and specific districts in Maharashtra, the meteorological agency has also noted that waterlogged streets and blocked transport routes are a direct consequence of the torrential rains.

Rainfall Impact

The effects of the relentless downpour have been felt across major urban areas. Reports indicate that parts of Maharashtra received over 200 mm of rainfall within a short span, leading to severe waterlogging in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane. Public transport services faced significant disruptions, with flights delayed and train services temporarily halted due to the adverse weather conditions. However, as the rain subsided in some areas, train and bus services have started to resume operations.

Weather Alerts and Forecast

While the India Meteorological Department had previously issued an orange alert for Mumbai, the intensification of the monsoon prompted the upgrade to a red alert until 8:30 am on Thursday. Sunil Kamble, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, stated, “As soon as we issued a red alert, we registered more than 200 mm of rain in the regions of Mumbai. Today, we have issued an orange alert for Mumbai and many other districts.”

As the situation evolves, the IMD has predicted a reduction in monsoon activity in the coming days, with chances of withdrawal from Maharashtra potentially extending to October 10. The agency has indicated that from tomorrow, green and yellow alerts will replace the current orange alerts in various districts.
