The Tamil Nadu government has activate emergency services, and residents are being urge to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. The depression, currently located in the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Nellore early on October 17. Here’s what you need to know about the situation and how to stay safe.

Cyclonic Depression: What’s Happening?

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression is currently position 490 km east-southeast of Chennai. It is predict to move in a west-northwest direction, crossing the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore during the early morning of October 17.

The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu, with isolated areas expected to receive the highest intensity of rain. Squally weather with wind speeds reaching up to 60 km/h is forecast along the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Government Response and Safety Measures

To ensure public safety, the Tamil Nadu government has put emergency services on high alert. Disaster management teams are in place, and relief centers have set up to accommodate those affect by the storm. Fishermen have strongly advised not to venture into the sea until further notice, as conditions are expect to be dangerous.

In anticipation of heavy rainfall, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges across four northern districts: Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on October 17. Government offices, public undertakings, and corporations in these areas will also remain close.

Residents are urge to stay indoors, follow official advisories, and keep update through local news sources for any emergency information.

The arrival of this depression also marks the beginning of the northeast monsoon in southeastern India. This period typically brings heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu and nearby states. While Tamil Nadu faces the brunt of the storm, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has also issued warnings for districts along the coast, including West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, and NTR districts. These areas are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, and wind speeds of up to 55 km/h are expect.

The APSDMA is working closely with local authorities to monitor the situation and has advised residents in coastal regions to be cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on weather reports.

Precautionary Measures for Residents

As the depression moves closer to land, here are some important safety tips to follow:

  1. Stay Indoors: Avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary. Strong winds and heavy rain can make it unsafe to travel.
  2. Stock Up: Ensure you have enough food, water, medications, and other essentials in case the storm disrupts services.
  3. Stay Updated: Keep an eye on weather updates from the IMD and local news. Official advisories will provide the latest information and safety instructions.
